50 million suffering from mental disorders in country

NEW DELHI: Around 50 million people suffer from mental disorders including depression and anxiety, and more than 7,000 of them committed suicide last year, government said.

"In 2005, the National Commission on Macroeconomics and Health reported that 10-20 million (1%-2%) suffered from severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and nearly 50 million (5% of population) from common mental disorders like depression and anxiety, yielding an overall estimate of 6.5% of population," health minister J P Nadda informed Lok Sabha.
